The Russo-Ottoman Conquest of the Ionian Islands

Abstract: In early October 1798 the Russo-Ottoman allied navy, under the leadership of the Russian Admiral Ushakov, started a slow but steady invasion against the French and the democrats at the Ionian Islands (Corfu, Paxos, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zante and Cerigo). It was the beginning of the Septinsular Republic (Επτάνησος Πολιτεία) which lasted for nine years (1800 t o 1809) as a nominal state of the Ottoman Empire and a protectorate of the Russian Empire.
